![]() Parallax scrolling was popularized in 2D computer graphics and was included in video games starting in the early 1980s. The example above is often referred to as 2.5D, two-and-a-half dimensional, or pseudo-3D perspective because it simulates the appearance of a three-dimensional scene. The technique grew out of the multiplane camera technique used in traditional animation in the 1930s:Įxample of 2.5D scrolling that simulates the appearance of a 3D scene. Parallax scrolling is a computer graphics technique in which background images move past the camera more slowly than the foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene.
